1. Flash Conclusion
Axis Bank's September-quarter results support the stable senior-credit view in the May issuer summary. The Indian private-sector bank funds a diversified retail, SME and corporate loan book principally through deposits. Lower problem-loan balances and credit costs, together with higher year-on-year profit, strengthen its capacity to absorb losses. CET1 of 14.61% and a consolidated average liquidity coverage ratio of about 119% remain meaningful buffers.
Foreign Currency Non-Resident (Bank), or FCNR (B), deposits and related lending boosted both sides of the balance sheet and diluted reported NIM. The bank's adjusted figures indicate much less underlying margin movement, while loan growth still exceeds deposit growth. Sequential profit and total capital adequacy declined. The result supports the existing senior-credit assessment, while a stronger return profile remains unproven.
2. Earnings: Better Year on Year, Softer Sequentially
On 17 October, the board approved unaudited standalone and consolidated results for the quarter and half-year ended 30 September 2026. Standalone Q2 PAT was INR70.03bn, up 38% year on year but down 2% from Q1. NII rose 12% year on year and 5% sequentially to INR153.71bn. Core operating profit, excluding trading income, increased 11% year on year to INR109.98bn, but fell 1% sequentially. H1 PAT increased 30% to INR141.17bn.
Lower provisions account for an important part of the year-on-year profit recovery. Provisions other than tax fell to INR16.94bn from INR35.47bn a year earlier, whereas operating profit increased only 6%. Extrapolating PAT growth would overstate recurring earnings improvement. Annualised standalone ROA fell to 1.38% from 1.51% in Q1, despite improving from 1.23% a year earlier.
Reported NIM declined 10bp sequentially to 3.36%. The bank reports 3.47% excluding the FCNR (B) impact, compared with Q1's reported 3.46%. The issuer's adjustment changes the interpretation of the headline decline, but does not establish a durable recovery. FCNR funding effects should remain separate from ordinary loan and deposit repricing.
3. Funding and Growth: Read the FCNR Adjustment Precisely
Period-end deposits reached INR14,520.66bn, up 21% year on year and 6% sequentially; net advances reached INR13,737.27bn, up 23% and 9%. Axis raised INR1,018bn of FCNR (B) deposits, including approximately INR438bn backed by advances extended by its international branches and INR449bn backed by standby letters of credit. The bank-loan-backed inflows do not represent independently generated customer funding.
Excluding the portion backed by the bank's own advances, deposits grew 17% year on year and approximately 3% sequentially, while advances grew 19% and approximately 5%. These are not figures excluding all FCNR deposits. The remaining loan-growth lead keeps deposit mobilisation central to sustainable expansion.
Reported month-end CASA was 36%, compared with 38% in Q1, but the bank also reports 38% after excluding the own-loan-backed FCNR portion. The ratio decline is therefore not entirely erosion of low-cost relationships. Even so, adjusted term deposits grew 21% year on year, faster than CASA balances at 11%. Funding durability and retention costs depend on renewal, maturity and hedge economics that headline growth does not establish.
4. Asset Quality, Capital and Liquidity
Asset quality improved on more than a ratio basis. Gross NPAs fell to INR167.78bn from INR171.25bn in June, while the gross and net NPA ratios declined to 1.16% and 0.35% from 1.28% and 0.39%. Fresh slippages decreased to INR47.62bn from INR55.66bn. However, the NPA reduction also reflects INR23.80bn of recoveries/upgrades and INR27.29bn of write-offs. Loan growth also expands the ratio denominator; migration and collections still matter.
Annualised net credit cost, defined net of recoveries from written-off accounts, fell to 0.45% from 0.63% in Q1. Specific NPA provision coverage remained 70%. Retail accounted for INR13.13bn of the INR14.12bn net slippages after adjustment for written-off-pool recoveries, keeping retail migration relevant despite the aggregate improvement. Corporate loans grew 34% year on year, SME loans 25% and mid-corporate loans 29%. Concentration, underwriting and loss recognition warrant scrutiny as these portfolios season.
CET1 declined slightly from 14.64% in June to 14.61%, while total CAR fell from 16.67% to 16.27%. Against March, CET1 increased 23bp, but the presentation notes a 21bp benefit from discontinuation of the Investment Fluctuation Reserve (IFR). The half-year increase is therefore not entirely operating capital generation. Aggregate RWA/assets declined to 71% from 72% in June; this does not resolve segment-specific risk density or capital consumption.
The consolidated quarterly-average LCR stayed around 119%. Excess statutory liquidity ratio securities were INR1,043.06bn, below Q1's INR1,417bn, and require monitoring alongside rapid lending. Other and one-time standard-asset provisions of INR80.06bn provide a bank-estimated 49bp cushion outside reported CAR; they must not be added to regulatory ratios. For senior creditors the combined buffers remain supportive; AT1 and Tier 2 investors still need separate instrument-level analysis of regulatory loss absorption, subordination and contractual terms.

6. What To Watch Next
Next results should test adjusted margins, sequential core profit and the persistence of lower credit costs. Track reported and FCNR-adjusted growth, underlying CASA, foreign-currency liquidity, and the new deposits' maturity, renewal, hedge and counterparty arrangements. Those structural details remain unconfirmed here.
The May additional discussion on NIM and the credit cycle remains relevant. Q2 provides progress on aggregate NPA migration, funding comparability and aggregate RWA density. It does not resolve vintage-level delinquency and cures, segment-specific credit costs and RWA density, management's quantified limits for restraining growth, or Citi-originated customer economics. Follow these gaps alongside capital consumption and liquidity as the faster-growing portfolios season.
Current ratings, individual bond terms and market spreads were not verified. The stable bank-credit conclusion does not establish security-specific value or equivalent protection for senior, Tier 2 and AT1 investors.
