1. Flash Conclusion
Baidu, Inc. (Baidu)'s second-quarter 2026 results reinforce the central tension in the existing credit view: AI-led revenue mix and operating cash flow are progressing, but the group has not demonstrated post-investment free-cash-flow (FCF) recovery. Core AI-powered Business revenue was RMB12.5bn, approximately half of Baidu General Business revenue, while AI Cloud Infra revenue rose 50% year on year. Consolidated operating cash flow was positive for a fourth consecutive quarter at RMB3.4bn. These are useful signs that the AI transition is producing commercial activity and that the 2025 operating-cash-flow deficit has not recurred.
The more important credit constraint is that capital expenditure rose to RMB11.4bn and exceeded operating cash flow by about RMB8.0bn. Accordingly, the company's defined consolidated FCF was negative RMB8.0bn and FCF excluding iQIYI was negative RMB8.3bn. At the same time, Baidu General Business revenue declined 4% year on year and Online Marketing Services fell 19%. AI Cloud growth may mitigate revenue pressure, but its segment cash conversion and ability to replace legacy advertising cash generation are not disclosed. The quarter leaves the credit view broadly unchanged: the substantial consolidated cash-and-investments balance provides group-level financial flexibility, while FCF conversion, advertising stabilisation and the availability of liquidity to the Cayman holding-company issuer remain the decisive monitoring issues.
2. Q2 Results and Cash-Flow Read-Through
Baidu announced unaudited results for the quarter ended 2026-06-30 on 2026-08-18. The company notes that its AI-powered Business operating data are derived from unaudited internal management accounts and records. The table below uses the cited Q2 2026, Q1 2026 and Q2 2025 company results releases. Each release presents operating cash flow, capex, FCF and the Baidu-ex-iQIYI measure under the same company-defined labels; these are company measures, not independently reported segment cash-flow statements.
| Metric | Q2 2025 | Q1 2026 | Q2 2026 | Credit read |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Consolidated revenue | RMB32.7bn | RMB32.1bn | RMB31.3bn | Down 4% YoY and 2% QoQ; top-line recovery is not yet established. |
| Baidu General Business revenue | RMB26.3bn | RMB26.0bn | RMB25.2bn | Down 4% YoY and 3% QoQ. |
| Online Marketing Services | RMB16.2bn | RMB12.6bn | RMB13.1bn | Down 19% YoY, though up 4% QoQ; the legacy advertising franchise remains under pressure. |
| Core AI-powered Business revenue | Not separately disclosed in this form | RMB13.6bn | RMB12.5bn | Remained about half of Baidu General Business revenue, but was lower QoQ. |
| Operating cash flow / capex / FCF | RMB(0.9)bn / RMB3.8bn / RMB(4.7)bn | RMB2.7bn / RMB5.9bn / RMB(3.2)bn | RMB3.4bn / RMB11.4bn / RMB(8.0)bn | Positive operating cash flow did not convert into FCF as AI-related investment increased. |
| Total cash and investments | Not disclosed | RMB279.3bn | RMB283.1bn | Substantial consolidated balance and group-level financial flexibility; not a measure of parent-level offshore debt-service liquidity. |
Revenue from iQIYI was RMB6.3bn, down 5% year on year but up 1% sequentially. Group operating income was RMB3.0bn, with a 10% margin, and net income attributable to Baidu was RMB2.3bn. The lower net-income outcome also reflected a sharp year-on-year reduction in other income, which the company attributed primarily to less fair-value gain on long-term investments and foreign-exchange loss. This supports a cautious reading of the earnings result: the operating business remains profitable, but neither revenue nor reported profit indicates a broad-based acceleration.
3. Credit Read-Through
First, the quarter advances the revenue-mix transition but does not yet establish a higher-quality funding model. AI Cloud Infra revenue grew 50% year on year and GPU Cloud revenue grew 283%; AI Applications revenue was RMB2.5bn, up 3%. These disclosed operational indicators demonstrate continuing demand for Baidu's AI infrastructure and applications. Yet the company does not disclose stand-alone margin, collection, capex or cash-flow information for these businesses. It would therefore be premature to infer that high AI Cloud revenue growth is equivalent to high cash conversion or to stronger debt-repayment capacity.
Second, the FCF outcome has weakened relative to Q1. Operating cash flow improved from RMB2.7bn to RMB3.4bn, but capital expenditure nearly doubled sequentially to RMB11.4bn. The result was a consolidated FCF deficit of RMB8.0bn, compared with negative RMB3.2bn in Q1. The deficit was also negative on the Baidu-ex-iQIYI presentation. For creditors, this makes the next confirmation point clearer: positive operating cash flow is supportive but insufficient if investment requirements persist above internally generated cash. The key evidence will be whether operating cash flow can exceed capex as AI Cloud grows, not whether AI revenue alone remains high-growth.
Third, Online Marketing Services remains the principal near-term business risk. Its 19% year-on-year decline means the traditional search-and-advertising funding base is still contracting even though the sequential result improved. The revenue composition illustrates the issue: the company's "Others" category grew 21% year on year, but Baidu General Business still declined 4%. Credit improvement would require evidence that AI-related growth can offset advertising weakness without a persistent cost, capex or working-capital burden. The release does not provide enough segment profitability or collection data to make that conclusion.
Fourth, the reported balance sheet provides group-level financial flexibility rather than an established issuer-liquidity conclusion. The company-defined total cash and investments rose to RMB283.1bn at 2026-06-30, versus RMB279.3bn at end-March. The consolidated amount is substantial relative to the quarterly FCF shortfall, but it should not be treated as cash immediately available to holders of Baidu, Inc.'s offshore senior notes. The issuer is a Cayman holding company, and the release does not resolve cash location, currency, the amount, location or accessibility of restricted cash, debt-service needs, subsidiary distribution capacity, VIE constraints or parent-level liquidity.
Finally, management continues to invest in AI and expand Apollo Go while returning US$259m to shareholders through repurchases since the beginning of Q1 2026. Apollo Go's international operating footprint is expanding, including testing or operations in new markets, but the release does not disclose its stand-alone revenue, economics, capex, vehicle costs or cash needs. The repurchase amount is modest against the reported liquidity base, and the event does not demonstrate a financial-policy deterioration. Still, the combination of repurchases, AI infrastructure capex and autonomous-driving investment warrants continued monitoring while FCF is negative.
The Q2 release directly tests portions of the outstanding 2026-05-29 additional discussion on AI-transition cash-flow risks. It confirms continued negative FCF, the capex-over-operating-cash-flow gap, AI Cloud growth, pressure on online marketing and continuing repurchases. It does not verify the discussion's hypotheses concerning AI Cloud unit economics, Apollo Go cash consumption, advertiser return on investment or parent-level offshore liquidity; those remain items for the next issuer-summary review rather than conclusions of this flash.
4. What To Watch Next
The next quarterly update should be assessed first for FCF conversion: operating cash flow, capex and FCF excluding iQIYI should be tracked together. It should also test whether AI Cloud Infra growth is accompanied by stable cost of revenue, receivable collection and evidence of utilisation or pricing discipline. A further material decline in Online Marketing Services, without an offset in Baidu General Business revenue and cash generation, would increase the risk that the legacy advertising franchise is structurally losing funding capacity.
For liquidity and financial policy, the relevant questions are the trajectory of total cash and investments, debt maturities, repurchases and any dividend execution alongside AI and Apollo Go spending. Separate confirmation is still needed for cash accessible at the Cayman parent, onshore/offshore and currency splits, the amount, location and accessibility of restricted cash, subsidiary and VIE distribution constraints, and current original rating-agency materials. Apollo Go scale and geographic expansion should remain an option value and investment-monitoring issue, not a near-term repayment source, until its economics are disclosed.
