1. Flash Conclusion
Industrial Bank's unaudited nine-month results provide some near-term relief on capital, but do not remove the earnings, asset-quality and funding questions identified in the H1 flash. Group CET1 improved to 9.52% at September from 9.43% at June, while the nine-month net interest margin (NIM) remained at the 1.60% reported for H1. These improvements should not be confused with a full reversal of the preceding pressure: nine-month attributable profit declined 3.79% year on year, the special-mention loan ratio increased and provision coverage fell.
The credit view remains stable to slightly cautious. The reported liquidity coverage ratio (LCR) of 154.19% and large deposit base support near-term liquidity, but the lower ratio, a decline in demand deposits and a material nine-month group operating cash outflow warrant further investigation. The disclosure does not establish a liquidity stress event; the regulatory eligible HQLA measure does not by itself establish intraperiod availability, currency matching or practical access in a different stress. Systemic importance is relevant context for senior creditors, but it is not a guarantee of any obligation.
2. Earnings and Capital
Nine-month revenue rose 0.22% year on year to RMB161.582bn, while attributable profit fell 3.79% to RMB60.691bn. In Q3 alone revenue rose 1.24% to RMB51.405bn and attributable profit fell 1.92% to RMB19.560bn. Nine-month net interest income fell 2.19% to RMB108.531bn; fee and commission income rose 4.18% to RMB20.921bn. Other non-interest net income rose 6.41% to RMB32.130bn. Such income can support loss absorption but may be more variable than recurring customer fees: the bank reports investment income, fair-value and foreign-exchange effects together as related items.
Nine-month NIM was 1.60%, 12bp below the prior-year period but unchanged from the H1 cumulative measure. The Q3 standalone NIM was 1.59%, down 9bp year on year. Equal H1 and nine-month cumulative margins do not prove that the bank has resolved asset-yield or deposit-mix pressure. The reported deposit interest rate fell to 1.40% in nine months, 2bp below the H1 figure; the longevity of that benefit remains to be tested.
| Metric | September 2026 / 9M | June 2026 / H1 | Credit significance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Group CET1 / total capital | 9.52% / 14.26% | 9.43% / 14.21% | Common-equity ratio improved 9bp, though remained below 9.70% at end-2025. |
| NIM, cumulative | 1.60% | 1.60% | Stable against H1, but nine-month NIM fell 12bp year on year. |
| NPL ratio / allowance coverage | 1.08% / 222.68% | 1.08% / 225.67% | NPL ratio unchanged; coverage declined 2.99 percentage points. |
| Special-mention loans | 1.77% | 1.72% | Early-risk category rose despite the stable NPL ratio. |
| Reported LCR | 154.19% | 168.95% | Regulatory measure declined; it does not disclose all stress-usable liquidity. |
The September group total-capital ratio includes other Tier 1 and Tier 2 capital. Those layers improve regulatory loss absorption but do not substitute for common equity. The bank-only CET1 ratio was 8.93%, versus 9.52% for the group; group and legal-bank measures should not be used interchangeably. The report gives group minimum capital requirements of RMB719.039bn, from which risk-weighted assets of approximately RMB8.988tn can be derived using an 8% minimum; that is an analytical calculation, not a separately reported RWA figure. It compares with the H1 report's RMB8.913tn. Changes in risk weights and exposures, retained earnings, distributions and conversion effects were not reconciled here, so the CET1 improvement cannot be attributed to a single cause.
The bank reports RMB41.352bn of convertible bonds remained unconverted at September, with RMB8.648bn converted cumulatively. Future conversion is not assured. The interim distribution authorisation refers to a ceiling linked to H1 attributable ordinary-share profit; it is not evidence that the full amount has been distributed or that common-equity capital is assured after distributions.
3. Asset Quality and Funding
The NPL ratio held at 1.08%, while special-mention loans increased to RMB108.692bn, or 1.77% of loans, from RMB106.157bn and 1.72% at June. Coverage slipped to 222.68%. Nine-month group credit impairment losses were RMB45.089bn compared with RMB42.227bn a year earlier. The bank says risks in personal credit cards and retail loans increased, while new corporate real-estate NPL formation decreased year on year and no new NPLs arose in financing-platform debt. Those management observations are not a complete measure of outstanding property or local-government exposure, loan migration, restructured loans or recoverability.
Gross loans were RMB6.150tn and deposits RMB6.200tn at September, up 3.38% and 4.57% respectively from year-end. Demand deposits fell 6.01% from year-end to RMB1.907tn, while time deposits rose 5.04% to RMB3.511tn and other deposits rose 40.14% to RMB782.516bn. The mix shift matters for franchise quality and future funding cost, although period-end balances do not establish average transaction balances, customer behaviour or all-in deposit cost. Compared with June, total assets fell from RMB11.461tn to RMB11.267tn and deposits from RMB6.228tn to RMB6.200tn; neither movement alone explains funding strategy or stress.
The report attributes the RMB327.214bn nine-month group net operating cash outflow, against a RMB202.903bn group inflow a year earlier, mainly to changes in interbank transactions, trading assets and customer deposit cash flows. The bank-only outflow was RMB302.030bn versus an inflow of RMB174.806bn a year earlier. A bank's operating cash flow is sensitive to balance-sheet and trading movements; this outflow is not directly comparable to an industrial company's free cash flow and does not by itself establish deposit flight or a funding deficit. The LCR was backed by regulatory eligible high-quality liquid assets (the LCR numerator) of RMB982.313bn and projected 30-day net outflows of RMB637.084bn. Composition and operational availability beyond the regulatory measure, intraperiod variability, foreign-currency needs, collateral and wholesale maturities require further disclosure; the H1 NSFR of 112.66% should not be presented as a current Q3 measure.
The August SSC discussion identified the interaction of earnings, RWA, early migration and usable liquidity as monitoring issues. This disclosure adds evidence on capital and reported liquidity, but does not validate its hypothetical thresholds, management responses, subsidiary transfers or stress scenario. For senior and Hong Kong Branch creditors, instrument-specific ranking and terms remain necessary; AT1 and Tier 2 holders face distinct loss-absorption and distribution risks.
4. What To Watch Next
- Whether CET1 can be maintained as RWA, dividend decisions and risk costs change, and whether the bank clarifies the sources of the September improvement.
- NIM and deposit costs alongside demand-deposit balances, average funding composition and maturity, repo and interbank funding.
- Special-mention migration, retail delinquencies, restructurings, property and local-government exposures, and allowance coverage.
- LCR and NSFR definitions and trend, collateral and unencumbered liquidity, and the drivers of cash-flow movements.
- Individual bond and capital-instrument documentation and up-to-date rating-agency analysis before assessing support or instrument-specific protection.
