1. Flash Conclusion
NAVER's preliminary 2Q26 results leave the core credit view unchanged: the domestic platform, payments and international C2C businesses are still generating double-digit revenue growth, while the group retains substantial consolidated liquidity. Revenue rose 16.2% year on year to KRW 3.389 trillion and cash plus short-term financial instruments rose modestly to KRW 8.401 trillion at end-2Q. However, operating profit declined 0.2% to KRW 520.3 billion and the operating margin fell to 15.4%, from 17.9% a year earlier and 16.7% in 1Q26. This further establishes that the earnings benefit of growth is currently being absorbed by the cost of computing assets, content, data and commercial investment.
NAVER presents a company-defined comparison under which, excluding Wallapop consolidation, the revision of depreciation periods and other one-off factors, operating profit increased 0.9% year on year. The release does not quantify and reconcile the individual adjustments, or provide a statutory cash-flow basis for treating this as normalized profitability. The reported operating-profit and margin declines are therefore the primary confirmed earnings signal pending the statutory filing. The same disclosure identifies an approximately KRW 100 billion annual expense-deferral effect from extending the useful life of computing assets such as GPUs and CPUs from five to six years. This is an accounting-estimate change, not additional cash generation, and means that the reported margin does not by itself show the full cash cost or return profile of AI infrastructure.
For creditors, the central conclusion is therefore stable but more conditional than in the 1Q flash. Consolidated cash plus short-term financial instruments still exceeded consolidated borrowings and debentures by approximately KRW 4.507 trillion at quarter-end, but management's company-defined net-cash measure declined to KRW 1.826 trillion from KRW 2.337 trillion at end-1Q. Investment execution, the funding and risk allocation of the proposed AI Factory structure, and the effect of logistics and merchant initiatives on margins and free cash flow are now the key near-term monitors.
2. What Was Announced
NAVER released preliminary K-IFRS consolidated 2Q26 results on 2026-08-07. The company notes that external review was not complete and that some items may change upon completion. The earnings release showed growth in each of its new service revenue categories, led by C2C, but operating expenses grew faster than revenue.
| Metric | 2Q26 | YoY / QoQ | Credit read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | KRW 3,388.8bn | +16.2% / +4.6% | Broad-based top-line growth continued. |
| Operating profit / margin | KRW 520.3bn / 15.4% | -0.2% / -4.0%; -2.5pp / -1.4pp | Costs and investment continued to outweigh revenue growth at the operating level. |
| Net profit | KRW 704.3bn | +41.6% / +142.0% | Improvement was driven by non-operating gains, including equity-method earnings and financial-instrument gains; it does not offset the margin signal. |
| NAVER Platform revenue | KRW 1,902.2bn | +12.3% / +3.4% | The core domestic platform remained the earnings foundation. |
| Financial Platform revenue / TPV | KRW 470.7bn / KRW 25.2tn | +16.0% / +2.4%; TPV +21.0% YoY | Payment activity grew, while financial-platform and merchant-execution risks remain relevant. |
| Global Opportunities revenue / C2C revenue | KRW 1,015.9bn / KRW 397.9bn | +24.4% / +7.9%; C2C +74.9% YoY | Growth accelerated, but the release does not establish a recurring cash contribution equivalent to the domestic platform. |
| Cash plus short-term financial instruments / borrowings and debentures | KRW 8,401.4bn / KRW 3,894.6bn | End-2Q | The aggregate liquidity cushion remained substantial despite higher debt. |

Operating expenses increased 19.8% year on year to KRW 2.868 trillion. Development and operations expense rose 15.2%, partner expense 22.0% and marketing expense 25.4%. NAVER attributed the partner-expense increase in part to Npay Connect terminal investment and World Cup content rights. Infrastructure expense increased 11.2%, even with increased acquisition of computing assets, because of the depreciation-period change. The company also disclosed that it cancelled 3.1% of existing treasury shares on 2026-08-03, equivalent to 4,901,094 shares and KRW 1.017 trillion at the cited closing price. The cancellation itself does not consume cash; the timing, funding and aggregate cash effect of the underlying treasury-share acquisition were not confirmed in the materials reviewed for this flash.
3. Credit Read-Through
The most supportive aspect of the release is that the revenue base remains diversified and still expanding. NAVER Platform revenue grew 12.3%, while Smartstore gross merchandise value grew 15.5%, according to the company. Financial Platform TPV reached KRW 25.2 trillion, with non-captive TPV up 26.2% to KRW 14.1 trillion. Global Opportunities grew faster than the group, aided by C2C growth at Poshmark and SODA. These results support the existing view that NAVER has more than a single advertising revenue source. They do not, however, prove that all growth businesses have comparable margins, cash conversion or resilience.
The main negative read-through is margin and cash-flow transparency. Reported operating margin has fallen by 3.7 percentage points from 4Q25 and by 2.5 points from 2Q25. Management identifies increased acquisition of computing assets, content and data as important cost drivers, while the useful-life change reduces current depreciation expense. Management's adjusted operating-profit comparison is not a demonstrated measure of cash economics or normalized profitability because the presentation does not provide a full quantitative reconciliation of its stated adjustments. The company-defined consolidated FCF chart is likewise not a substitute for a statutory cash-flow statement, and the half-year DART filing was not available in the materials reviewed for this flash. Accordingly, this report does not calculate free cash flow or attribute a specific share of capex to AI. The next statutory filing needs to confirm operating cash flow, capex, working-capital movements, debt movements and the accounting treatment of the disclosed changes.
Funding is still a credit strength, but the cushion has narrowed on the company's measure. Cash plus short-term financial instruments increased slightly from KRW 8.357 trillion at end-1Q to KRW 8.401 trillion at end-2Q, while borrowings and debentures increased to KRW 3.895 trillion from KRW 3.618 trillion. The company-defined net-cash figure, which deducts NAVER Financial cash as well as borrowings, declined by roughly KRW 512 billion quarter on quarter. This reinforces the existing caution that consolidated liquidity and cash directly available to NAVER Corporation creditors are different concepts.
The proposed AI Factory Phase 1 also adds execution and structural questions rather than an immediate balance-sheet conclusion. NAVER described a plan under which it would consolidate an AI Factory operating company with a 100% stake, while Brookfield, identified as the preferred negotiation partner, could invest up to USD 9 billion in an SPV and hold a majority stake in that SPV. The presentation also refers to NVIDIA's USD 1 billion investment in NAVER. The transaction structure, final commitments, recourse, funding timing, lease or offtake obligations, and effects on NAVER's consolidated debt and cash flow were not established in the materials reviewed. They should not be assumed from the illustrative business-structure slide.
4. What To Watch Next
- The statutory 2Q/half-year filing: cash flow, capex, debt maturity and currency breakdown, the effect of the useful-life change, and whether the reported preliminary figures change after external review.
- The distinction between reported and cash operating economics of AI infrastructure, including the payback profile of computing assets and data-centre investment.
- Final AI Factory agreements: equity contributions, guarantees, funding commitments, SPV debt, offtake obligations, consolidation and NAVER's exposure to the project.
- Whether logistics expansion and Npay Connect improve revenue durability without an outsized increase in partner, marketing or working-capital requirements.
- The availability of parent-company liquidity, fund-transfer restrictions and the consolidated debt/cash position of NAVER Financial and other key subsidiaries.
- Ratings, note terms, live bond prices, yields and spreads were not reconfirmed for this flash.
