1. Flash Conclusion
Shanghai Pudong Development Bank's unaudited third-quarter report adds a fuller picture to its preliminary first-half operating update. Group revenue rose 6.32% year on year to RMB44.36bn in July–September, while net profit attributable to the parent rose 5.93% to RMB9.62bn. The group non-performing loan (NPL) ratio edged down to 1.24% at September, but allowance coverage fell to 195.66%. Parent-bank common equity Tier 1 (CET1) was 8.98%, and the group liquidity coverage ratio (LCR) declined to 115.57% from 124.89% at June.
The report supports the existing view of a large deposit-gathering franchise with a thin capital buffer and significant asset-quality and earnings risks. Deposit growth exceeded loan growth, but a smaller LCR buffer and falling allowance coverage temper the favourable headline trends. The results do not establish that problem-asset formation or funding sensitivity has been resolved. The prior issuer summary's support expectation, including the bank's systemic importance and Shanghai municipal-related shareholder linkage, remains distinct from an explicit guarantee of any instrument.
2. Earnings and Loss Absorption
Nine-month group revenue was RMB138.13bn, up 4.42% year on year; attributable profit was RMB40.57bn, up 4.52%. The quarterly revenue growth rate exceeded that for the nine-month period, although a single quarter does not establish a durable change in earnings power. Nine-month credit impairment losses of RMB51.17bn increased from RMB50.14bn in the prior-year period. Q3 losses were RMB17.37bn versus RMB17.94bn a year earlier. These are income-statement charges, not a measure of newly formed NPLs or a complete estimate of future losses.
The components also matter. In Q3, net interest income was RMB32.18bn versus RMB31.30bn a year earlier, while net fees fell to RMB5.03bn from RMB5.51bn. Investment income rose to RMB12.51bn from RMB3.87bn, alongside a RMB6.30bn fair-value loss compared with a RMB0.24bn gain. These line items are not interchangeable, and the disclosure does not establish that the investment and valuation moves arose from the same instruments. Their volatility limits the amount of recurring earnings strength that can be inferred from total revenue alone.
The H1 interim report summary showed a 1.43% net interest margin (NIM) for January–June; the Q3 report used here does not provide an equivalent updated NIM. Net interest income is therefore useful evidence of the reported income trend, not proof that the margin continued to widen. Funding costs and asset yields need to be checked in the next detailed disclosure.
3. Asset Quality and Capital
The group reported RMB73.10bn of NPLs, slightly below RMB73.20bn at June but above RMB71.99bn at year-end 2025. The NPL ratio declined by one basis point from June, while allowance coverage fell by 2.15 percentage points from 197.81%. A lower headline ratio alongside weaker coverage calls for attention to disposals, write-offs, collateral recoveries and the provision required on remaining exposures. The report does not establish the economic cost of disposals or the prospective path of credit losses.
Special-mention loans were RMB114.76bn, or 1.94% of loans, versus 2.09% at year-end. That is a useful early-warning measure, but it does not capture every potential weakness. The previous issuer summary identified real estate, retail credit and less transparent non-loan credit as continuing risks. A lower aggregate ratio should not be read as a full resolution of those exposures.
At September, parent-bank CET1 was 8.98%, compared with 9.01% at June; group CET1 was 9.04% compared with 9.05%. Parent-bank total capital was 12.47%, versus 12.57% at June. The report states applicable parent CET1, Tier 1 and total-capital requirements of 8%, 9% and 11%, including the indicated domestic systemic-bank add-on. Thus the parent CET1 margin above the stated requirement was approximately 0.98 percentage point, a calculated comparison rather than a measure of distributable capital or a forecast of regulatory action. Changes in risk-weighted assets, retained earnings and loss recognition can consume that margin. Holders of capital securities should separately examine their contractual loss-absorption and distribution provisions.
4. Funding and Liquidity
Group deposits rose to RMB6,029.00bn from RMB5,864.10bn at June, while loans including discounted bills rose to RMB5,910.95bn from RMB5,868.25bn. Both amounts are principal balances as defined in the report. The simple loan-to-deposit ratio fell to approximately 98.0% from 100.1%. This supports the observation that customer funding grew faster than lending, but is not a regulatory liquidity ratio and does not establish the maturity, stickiness or cost of the incremental deposits.
The group LCR, by contrast, fell to 115.57% at September from 124.89% at June. September high-quality liquid assets of RMB1,268.43bn and net outflows of RMB1,097.51bn were both above their June amounts. The ratio remains above 100%, but the decline warrants monitoring rather than a conclusion that liquidity improved solely because deposits rose. The detailed drivers, currency-level liquidity and the latest net stable funding ratio were not established in the Q3 report used here.
