Event title: Q3 2026 Battery Results

Flash Conclusion

SK Innovation's battery-business result returned to an operating loss of KRW80.5 billion in Q3 2026, after a KRW821.8 billion profit in Q2. Revenue fell to KRW1,526.3 billion from KRW2,946.0 billion. The parent attributes the sequential decline to lower sales volume and the absence of one-time gains in the preceding quarter. Management says profitability excluding one-off factors continued to improve, but has not supplied a numerical bridge sufficient to verify that claim or establish a normalized margin.

The Q3 result weakens the case that the positive Q2 reported result represented a durable battery earnings run rate. It does not show how much of the swing is due to the prior one-off item versus volume, incentives and costs. The evidence therefore supports continued caution about recurring battery earnings and their conversion into cash, rather than a definitive conclusion that underlying unit economics deteriorated. The earlier improvement in visibility from SK On's H1 legal-entity statements remains valuable, but those June figures do not establish September liquidity or Q3 debt-service capacity.

This release measures the battery business in SK Innovation's reporting perimeter, not the standalone financial statements of SK On Co., Ltd. The company also has trading and other activities within its broader reorganized perimeter. Parent-wide profits and consolidated cash are not automatically resources available to the issuer. Credit analysis of Kookmin Bank-guaranteed SK Battery America notes remains separate from the risk of unguaranteed SK On obligations.

The Quarterly Swing

The parent published its Q3 results on October 29. Its table records battery revenue of KRW15,263 hundred million and an operating loss of KRW805 hundred million, equivalent to KRW1,526.3 billion and KRW80.5 billion respectively. The figures below compare the battery line with the same business line in the preceding earnings release; they are not legal-entity financial statements.

Battery business, KRW billion Q2 2026 Q3 2026 Reading
Revenue 2,946.0 1,526.3 Down KRW1,419.7 billion, or about 48.2%, calculated sequentially.
Operating profit / (loss) 821.8 (80.5) Deteriorated KRW902.3 billion; the prior period contained a one-time benefit.
Operating margin, calculated 27.9% (5.3)% Each period's reported result divided by revenue; neither is an incentive-adjusted margin.

For Q2 the company cited higher Asian sales, one-off customer compensation and increased Advanced Manufacturing Production Credit (AMPC). For Q3 it cited reduced sales volume and the base effect of Q2 one-time gains. Its latest announcement also attributes claimed underlying improvement to cost reductions and operating efficiency. That directional statement is constructive if sustained, but the disclosed information does not separately quantify the Q2 compensation, Q3 AMPC, or the effect of volume and fixed-cost savings. The reported KRW902.3 billion swing cannot be assigned to any single driver, and the release does not establish operating profit excluding all incentives and temporary items.

This distinction changes the emphasis of the previous August flash. Q2 proved that a positive reported battery quarter was possible, but its margin depended in part on disclosed temporary or incentive-related factors. Q3 demonstrates that the reported profit did not repeat. It does not by itself disprove the company's view that underlying profitability improved, because neither comparable adjusted operating result is shown. Repeated positive cash generation after investment, supported by a clear reconciliation of incentives and compensation, would be stronger evidence of a self-sustaining recovery.

Demand, ESS and Execution

Management expects a gradual Q4 battery-sales recovery as major-customer volumes rise, while recognizing market uncertainty. It plans to align production and supply with demand, reduce costs and seek additional energy-storage orders. These are forward-looking plans rather than evidence of Q4 shipments or profitability. A recovery in sales would help fixed-cost absorption only if pricing, plant utilization, yield and customer collections are sufficient; these details are not quantified in the release.

SK Innovation cites an approximately 9 GWh LFP pouch-cell supply agreement with NeoVolta and LFP cathode supply agreements with L&F and POSCO Future M as part of SK On's North American energy-storage expansion. The cited announcement supports evidence of a customer agreement and sourcing initiatives, not a measured contribution to current profit or cash. Contract pricing, margins, cancellation provisions, warranties, delivery timing, plant conversion costs and remaining funding needs require further verification. More orders can improve asset utilization, but converting them into durable credit support depends on execution and cash collection as well as volume.

The earlier assessment also highlighted the BlueOval SK restructuring and residual commitments. The H1 filing confirmed the transfer of Kentucky assets and liabilities to Ford in May; it did not establish that all residual guarantees, settlement costs and customer commitments ended. The Q3 battery announcement does not resolve those obligations or supply a comprehensive capex and debt-maturity bridge. These questions remain relevant even if lower costs improve reported operating profit.

Liquidity and Creditor Implications

The most recent SK On legal-entity statements previously reviewed are for June 30. At that date, separate-company cash and equivalents were KRW983.7 billion, compared with KRW3,255.7 billion of short-term borrowings and the current portion of long-term debt. Consolidated cash was KRW5,096.0 billion against KRW7,396.9 billion of current borrowings, excluding leases. The H1 notes classify KRW357.8 billion of consolidated cash and cash equivalents as restricted for debt-service reserves and a customs deposit; restricted financial products are listed separately. Consolidated cash includes amounts held across subsidiaries, and its availability or transferability to the issuer has not been established.

H1 separate-company operating cash flow was KRW1,157.2 billion, supported by a KRW648.5 billion positive working-capital adjustment; consolidated operating cash flow was KRW1,414.6 billion. The latter exceeded consolidated cash purchases of property, plant and equipment by KRW444.0 billion, a limited calculation that excludes other investing, lease and financing flows. These H1 results improved visibility into actual cash generation but do not show a Q3 battery cash-flow bridge. The separate and consolidated perimeters include activities beyond the battery line, and the working-capital release cannot safely be annualized. A quarterly battery operating loss alone cannot be converted into an equivalent issuer cash outflow.

SK Innovation's Q3 consolidated operating profit was KRW3.70 trillion, primarily supported by energy and lubricants. This provides group context but does not establish a committed support amount, priority or immediate access to parent cash for SK On creditors. The issuer's own refinancing, facility conditions and residual project obligations still need to be assessed. For Kookmin Bank-guaranteed SK Battery America notes, the relevant guarantee terms, continuing effectiveness and guarantor credit need separate verification. This flash does not update bond-specific ratings, covenants or market valuation.

What To Watch Next

The next battery release should provide a bridge between reported and recurring operating results, including AMPC, other incentives, customer compensation, volumes, utilization and realized cost savings. Review Q4 demand against actual orders and shipments, with particular attention to ESS conversion costs, customer and warranty risks, and whether new volume generates cash after working capital and investment.

Obtain the next SK On separate and consolidated financial statements to update cash, restricted balances, borrowings, maturity profile, cash flow and capital spending. Reconcile changes in debt and cash across reorganized entities and check facility availability, legal transfer restrictions and remaining Kentucky-related commitments. The current parent announcement does not establish September SK On legal-entity liquidity or a precise future filing date. Bond-by-bond guarantee, covenant and rating checks remain necessary before making a security-specific conclusion.
