1. Flash Conclusion
BDO Unibank's nine-month 2026 update warrants a more cautious capital-monitoring bias within the existing low-investment-grade bank credit view. Its common equity Tier 1 (CET1) ratio declined to 12.6%, from 13.1% at June and 13.8% at December 2025, while loans grew 16% year on year. It is now below the 13% internal monitoring line identified in prior work. That line is an analytical trigger, not an identified regulatory minimum, and the reviewed release does not establish a breach or quantify headroom to the applicable requirement.
The credit offset remains material: pre-provision operating profit (PPOP) increased 10%, the non-performing loan (NPL) ratio fell to 1.60%, and NPL coverage stayed at 132%. Net income of PHP63.6bn was little changed against the prior year. For senior creditors, the large domestic deposit franchise and ability to generate earnings remain supportive, but the declining CET1 ratio alongside rapid growth has become more consequential. The reviewed material does not provide a capital bridge or enough segment-level impairment data to determine the driver or duration of the CET1 decline.
2. Earnings and Asset Quality
BDO's board approved September financial statements and the release of its nine-month results on 30 October. The official PSE Form 17-C reports PHP63.6bn net income, 13.1% return on equity, 16% loan growth and 10% PPOP growth. A reproduction of the attached company release reports PHP63.1bn net income in the comparable 2025 period, so the year-on-year increase was approximately 0.8%; the full attachment was not independently obtained from the PSE page reviewed. Higher pre-provision income has therefore not translated into comparable net-income growth. The available release does not provide the complete impairment, tax and other below-PPOP bridge needed to attribute the difference to a particular expense.
The same reproduction states that net interest income rose 11% and non-interest income 3%, while operating expenses increased at a single-digit rate. These figures are consistent with a viable earnings buffer, but the separate movements of net interest margin, provisioning and one-off items remain unverified from the full quarterly statements. The H1 flash reported credit cost of 67 basis points; it should not be carried forward as the 9M credit-cost figure without a new disclosure.
Headline asset quality improved: the PSE filing reports a 1.60% NPL ratio and 132% coverage. The reproduced release gives a 1.77% NPL ratio a year earlier; the prior H1 flash reported 1.64% at June 2026 and the same 132% coverage. Those indicators support the bank's present loss-absorption position. However, a lower ratio during rapid lending growth does not establish that recent origination vintages are performing better: the release does not report current card and consumer-loan migration, write-offs, absolute NPL balances or an impairment-to-PPOP ratio. The prior discussion's hypotheses about those segments therefore remain monitoring questions, not verified causes of current provisions.
3. Capital, Funding and Senior-Credit Implications
The 12.6% CET1 ratio is 0.5 percentage points below June and 1.2 points below year-end 2025. This crosses the 13% internal watch line established in earlier coverage and makes management's capital response more important. It does not by itself identify the applicable capital floor, regulatory headroom or the contribution of risk-weighted-asset growth, dividend distribution, valuation movements and earnings retention. A full capital and RWA bridge is required before interpreting the change as a particular form of capital depletion. Nor does a monitoring threshold mechanically imply a downgrade or loss for a senior bondholder.
The credit concern is the combination of the declining reported CET1 ratio and sustained expansion rather than the isolated ratio. Double-digit PPOP growth and stable coverage show that BDO still has an earnings and provisioning buffer; that buffer must support both additional lending and any future credit losses. The next result should establish whether capital stabilizes through retained earnings, whether RWA intensity changes, and whether management adjusts loan growth, underwriting or dividends. The company has not established such a response in the material reviewed, and no specific capital action is assumed here.
The reproduction of the company release reports that gross customer loans increased 16% to PHP4.1tn, while deposits grew 11% and current and savings accounts grew 5%. As year-on-year growth rates, the five-percentage-point loan/deposit gap is an indicator to monitor, not an incremental funding deficit or a loan-to-deposit ratio. CASA growth below total-deposit growth suggests a shift in the growth mix, but the release does not state the resulting CASA share, deposit cost or maturity profile. At H1, the corresponding growth rates were 15%, 13% and 4%. The recent pattern strengthens the case for watching marginal funding costs and access, without establishing that funding or liquidity has become stressed.
The board also approved an increase in the unissued portion of its peso bond programme to PHP500bn. A programme authorization is not equivalent to bonds issued, cash received, committed liquidity or an identified use of proceeds. The size and terms of any subsequent issuance, and whether it funds growth or refinancing, remain to be checked. Foreign-currency resources, offshore funding maturities, LCR and NSFR were not established in the reviewed event source. BDO's SM Group relationship remains context for correlated exposure, not a legal guarantee of senior debt.

5. What To Watch Next
Obtain the complete September quarterly report, detailed capital and RWA reconciliation, applicable CET1 requirement and current regulatory headroom. Track the extent to which retained earnings, distributions and growth explain the ratio's movement, and whether management announces a concrete capital-preservation response. Check whether the decline below the internal 13% line persists; this line is not a regulatory threshold.
Reassess loan growth against deposit growth, CASA share, funding costs, LCR, NSFR and foreign-currency liquidity. For asset quality, seek credit costs, impairment/PPOP, card and consumer-loan delinquency and write-off data, and Stage 2 and Stage 3 migration. The 9M disclosure directly addresses the prior discussion's headline capital and NPL-coverage tests, while the segment, FX-funding and management-response questions remain unresolved. Those broader questions remain outstanding for the next issuer summary.
