1. Flash Conclusion
Woori Bank, the deposit-taking commercial bank within Woori Financial Group, reported a stronger third-quarter profit and higher estimated bank-level capital. These developments support the existing broadly stable senior-credit view, but do not justify a broad improvement in the assessment. Lower credit charges helped earnings while bank-only margins and funding mix weakened; reported delinquency rose and loan loss reserve coverage fell despite a small reduction in non-performing loans (NPLs). The repayment analysis therefore remains centred on the operating bank, rather than parent-group profit or shareholder distributions.
The October 23 Fact Book addresses part of the prior flash's capital question by refreshing second-quarter comparators, but marks third-quarter capital ratios as estimates. Bank-consolidated earnings below are kept separate from the source's bank-only lending, funding and asset-quality tables and its bank-level Basel III capital measures. Research cutoff: 2026-10-26.
2. Profit Recovery Has Qualifications
Bank-consolidated quarterly net income rose 22.0% sequentially and 39.7% year on year to KRW 1,027.9 billion. Adding the three disclosed quarters gives nine-month profit of KRW 2,392.5 billion, up 4.6% from KRW 2,287.9 billion; this is an analyst calculation, not a separate company nine-month line. The smaller cumulative increase is a useful check against extrapolating the strong third quarter.
Pre-provision operating profit increased to KRW 1,505.2 billion from KRW 1,345.0 billion, while consolidated credit-loss provisions fell to KRW 145.4 billion from KRW 262.2 billion. Lower charges support current reported earnings, but their persistence matters because bank-only delinquency moved adversely. Consolidated net interest income was almost flat sequentially at KRW 2,081.7 billion; the larger revenue improvement came from non-interest income, which rose to KRW 406.0 billion from KRW 231.8 billion in the income statement.
That uplift was not uniform fee acceleration. The separate bank-consolidated component table shows fees falling 8.1% sequentially to KRW 305.9 billion and securities moving from a KRW 143.6 billion loss to a KRW 3.3 billion gain. Those disclosures support caution about market-sensitive contributions; they do not establish that the entire improvement is non-recurring or identify a permanent earnings step-up.

3. Lower NPLs Do Not Establish a Turn in Asset Quality
Bank-only NPLs fell modestly and the NPL ratio edged down to 0.385% from 0.392%. However, NPLs remained above KRW 1,024.5 billion a year earlier, and loan-loss reserves declined to KRW 1,685.0 billion from KRW 1,792.7 billion. The 126.7% coverage ratio includes only loan-loss reserves; the separately reported credit-loss-reserve balance must not be added to that numerator without changing the measure.
Delinquency rose to 0.462% from 0.434%, including SME arrears of 0.774% versus 0.748% and SOHO arrears of 0.623% versus 0.601%. The direction therefore remains less reassuring than the headline NPL movement. The bank also reported write-offs of about KRW 110.0 billion and loan sales of KRW 238.3 billion on its stated FSS reporting basis. Without a full formation, recovery and disposal bridge, a lower NPL stock cannot establish that borrowers have cured or that underlying credit formation has eased.
This combination does not demonstrate an imminent capital problem. It does make sustained lower credit charges a less secure assumption for future earnings. A further rise in arrears alongside weaker reserve coverage and margin pressure would be more consequential for creditors than any one quarterly ratio in isolation.
4. Capital Helps, While Funding Mix Bears Watching
The bank-level CET1 ratio increased to 15.8% from the current book's 15.4% Q2 comparator; BIS rose to 18.2% from 17.9%. The prior flash used estimated Q2 ratios of 15.3% and 17.8%, so the refreshed comparison is more appropriate. Common equity capital increased 1.0% sequentially to KRW 29.575 trillion and risk-weighted assets fell 1.5% to KRW 187.374 trillion. Both movements support the higher ratio; it should not be attributed solely to profit retention. Q3 estimates still need the promised next-quarter detail, and the bank table must not be replaced by parent-group capital figures.
Bank-only funding was broadly flat at KRW 411.8 trillion. Low-cost deposits fell to KRW 130.0 trillion from KRW 138.0 trillion, while time deposits increased to KRW 176.0 trillion from KRW 165.4 trillion. The 36.2% low-cost share uses total won-denominated funding as its denominator, not all deposits; the core-deposit share on that same basis fell to 27.5% from 29.0%.
The margin table shows won-deposit cost rising to 2.22% from 2.06%, consistent with a less favourable funding backdrop. Bank-only quarterly NIM fell about 7 basis points to 1.43%. Meanwhile the reported loan-to-deposit ratio increased to 98.4% from 97.2%; it is a monthly-average measure excluding policy loans. Remaining below 100% is supportive of deposit funding, but is not a liquidity-stress test. Latest LCR, NSFR and currency-specific liquidity were not established by this Fact Book review, so domestic funding depth should not be equated with verified resilience to external-currency stress.
5. What To Watch Next
The next result should establish whether arrears stabilise without further erosion of reserve coverage, whether lower charges persist alongside demonstrably better credit formation, and whether deposit mix and NIM recover. Confirm the estimated capital figures and the source of further risk-weighted-asset changes. Obtain current liquidity and foreign-currency coverage measures before making a funding-stress judgment. Group capital allocation remains relevant context, but the present disclosure does not establish unrestricted parent resources available to bank creditors or change the different loss-absorption risks of senior debt, Tier 2 and AT1.
